In defence of comfort zones

If you are chronically online like me,

You may have often heard voices pleading for

You to get out of your comfort zone.

Phrases like “ true growth happens when you leave your comfort zone”.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”.

And who can forget the classic “ the only thing stopping you from where you are to where you want to be is your comfort zone”.

Well to this i say kiss my ass.

I like being in my comfort zone.

Comfort zones are a wonderful thing.

They are safe spaces.

Places you can be your true self without fear of judgement.

They are also great places for evaluating and calculating your next steps.

Don’t sway to the popular narratives and opinions on the internet.

While yes sometimes it does become your best interest to take risks, I believe that constantly taking them can’t possibly be any good for you.

Because ultimately you gamble your life away doing that.

Sure you learn lessons from those risks especially if they don’t pan out, but is the pain ever really worth it in the end?

These are things I am now asking and reminding myself moving forward whenever it comes to risk taking.

The older i get the more i realize im not bulletproof (see above picture) and thats okay.

I have many good things to live for and alot more to lose than when i was younger.

My mortal frailty leaves me with a greater sense of appreciation for the familiar, for the comfortable, for the safe.

You don’t always have to leave your comfort zone. Sometimes it may even be more beneficial for you to stay in it for a while, re-evaluate and assess.

This year i have done many things that disrupted the relative safety and familiarity of my comfort zone and have thrown me headfirst into chaos. And i was deeply humbled each time.

Looking back in hindsight i have been extremely lucky in certain situations.

Things could have gone south at any point

But thank god they didnt.

I have gambled with my life on more than one occasion and ultimately for what?

The gift of life is not something to toy with. Certainly not something to gamble away taking half calculated risks.

Remember, a lot of once highly motivated, discomfort seeking people on Mount Everest are now dead.
